The Terps have said goodbye to Cole Field House. They have
officially opened the new Comcast Center. Let's take the tour. Click
on the thumbnails to see the larger size photo.
From the outside, the building looks... modern.. immense..
Immediately inside the door, the National Championship trophy is on
display.
There's a multi - leveled lobby that is spacious, well lighted, classy.
Let's go inside the arena... just look at this scoreboard.
Here's the court. First 10 rows all around are the student seats.
Of course, the new banner hangs from the rafters.
Also up in the rafter area is one of the features of Comcast Center that
you're really going to like.. see those big tube shaped ducts? Those are
the air conditioning ducts.
In the last quarter of the game, the opposing team will have to shoot foul
shots while looking into a really steeply banked section of fans.
Guaranteed to be distracting to those poor guys. Here's a better look at
it.
And get this... lots of clean looking snack bars.
Lots of memorabilia around, too.. here's a section of the currently being
auctioned floor where they
won the championship
Here's a big collage of Maryland athletic figures.
Off to the side of the main lobby is a trophy hall. Here is part of the
display.
And here's a copy of a ticket to the first regular season game at Comcast
Center.
First impressions? That cool air coming down on the
fans during the game from an air conditioning system.. oh.. that is SO SWEET.
The new arena seems noticeably quieter than Cole. Lots of rest rooms and
the snack bars looked so much nicer. The overall design is superb.
Lots of sports memorabilia. One can't walk through there
without making an unconscious comparison to Cole Field House. You'll
love that air conditioning.
