There are now three war memorials located on the Mall in DC near the
Reflecting Pool. Use this map to help you find a parking
place.
Park in Area 1, WWII Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, and Korean Memorial are in
Areas 2-4.
The first memorial built was to honor the veterans killed in Vietnam.
It is still one of the most popular tourist destinations in Washington.
The first two shots are day shots, the last one was taken at night. As you
view the thumbnail, notice that the wall points straight to the Washington
Monument.

The second memorial built honored Korean War Veterans. The
memorial consists of a polished granite wall with some life sized metal soldiers
advancing through a field. On one section of the wall, images of soldiers
are etched in the face of the wall.
The newest
memorial honors veterans of World War II. The memorial is at the end of
the Reflection Pool opposite the Lincoln Memorial. One of the photos below
shows the view from the Lincoln Memorial. The memorial does not obscure
the Washington Monument or the Capitol. It is elliptically shaped with the
long sides perpendicular to the line between the Washington Monument and the
Lincoln Memorial. On the outer ends of the memorial are two towers
commemorating the Atlantic and the Pacific theaters of the War. On the
ends, there are a series of columns saluting the veterans from each of the
states and territories. As we photographed the memorial before the actual
opening, the many reflecting pools incorporated into the memorial had not been
filled. Some of the walls composing the memorial feature inscriptions that
quote leaders or writers of the time. In some parts of the walls, there
are metal relief sculptures depicting war scenes. There is one arc shaped
wall that displays 4,000 gold stars. Each one represents 100 combat
deaths.
